USMLE

Each program offered by EuroMed Institute is based on an integrative curriculum that provides our students the option to complete their medical degree in four to seven years. We believe that the exposure to both the EU and U.S. system of medicine will make the best physicians.

The USMLE is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME). Currently enrolled EuroMed students and graduates from one of our partner international universities must be in compliance with all eligibility requirements and criteria put forward by the Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in order to take the USMLE.

Overview

  • All EuroMed students and international medical graduates take the USMLE Step 1 Exam after receiving a passing score on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Basic Science Comprehensive Examination.
  • All EuroMed students and international medical graduates take the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge Exam after receiving a passing score on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Clinical Science Comprehensive Examination.
  • All EuroMed students and international medical graduates take the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills Exam after receiving passing scores on the USMLE Step 1 Exam and the NBME Basic Science Comprehensive Exam.
  • All EuroMed students and international medical graduates take the USMLE Step 3, which is the final exam of the series. USMLE Step 3 assesses the student’s ability to apply their medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science to effectively manage an unsupervised clinical practice.
  • Medical school graduates typically take the Step 3 exam at the end of the first year of residency. At EuroMed, we encourage our students to take the exam prior to receiving the residency match, as USMLE completion can increase the chances of the applicant receiving his or her first choice in programs and coveted specialties.

Brief Exam Schedule in Chronological Order

  • NBME – Comprehensive Basic Science Exam

The Comprehensive Basic Science Exam is a multiple-choice exam comprised of approximately 200 multiple-choice questions divided into 4 blocks. It assesses the tester’s knowledge of materials covered in basic science medical education courses. The content of the Comprehensive Basic Science Exam is similar to that of the USMLE STEP 1.

  • USMLE Step 1

The USMLE Step 1 is comprised of approximately 280 multiple-choice questions divided into seven 60-minute blocks. The exam assesses the tester’s understanding and ability to apply important scientific concepts to the practice of medicine, with special emphasis on the principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease and modes of therapy.

  • NBME – Comprehensive Basic Science Exam

The NBME Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam is approximately 184 multiple-choice questions divided into four blocks. The exam assesses the tester’s knowledge of materials covered in clinical clerkships. The content of the Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam is similar to that of the USMLE STEP 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK).

  • USMLE STEP 2

The USMLE Step 2 is comprised of approximately 318 multiple-choice questions divided into eight, 60-minute blocks. There are two components of Step 2, Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS).
Step 2 CK uses the multiple-choice examination format to test clinical knowledge. The content of this component is similar to that of the NBME-Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam (described above).
Step 2 CS uses standardized patients to test medical students and graduates on their ability to be patient-centered, to address the diagnostic challenges posed, to prepare the patient for next steps, and to document the encounter appropriately. The exam is offered in five cities across the U.S: Philadelphia, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago. No preliminary NBME Exam is required for USMLE STEP 2 CS.

  • USMLE STEP 3

The USMLE Step 3 is a two-day exam, and the final component of the three-part exam series.
